YNAB is a strong budgeting app with bank connections in some countries, a web app and Android support. What YNAB does well

YNAB (You Need A Budget) is a budgeting app built around giving every unit of money a job. If your main goal is to change how you spend month to month, it is a focused tool with a loyal following, and it is worth taking seriously.

  • More places to use it. It runs on iOS, Android and the web, so you can budget on a laptop and check on a phone. SampattiTrack is iPhone and iPad only.
  • Bank connections where supported. YNAB's pricing page says direct bank import works with select banks in the US, Canada, the UK and the EU. If your bank is on that list, transactions can arrive without typing.
  • A clear budgeting method. It is designed around one way of budgeting and teaches it well.
  • A free trial. The trial is 34 days, and no card is needed if you sign up directly with YNAB.

Where SampattiTrack differs

SampattiTrack is a personal finance app rather than a budgeting method. It keeps a real double-entry ledger underneath, so balances always reconcile, and it covers more of the picture: accounts, credit cards, loans, net worth, cash flow and investments, as well as budgets and goals.

  • Privacy by design. Your ledger is stored and computed on your device. There is no sign-up, no login, no bank connection and no analytics. Optional sync uses your own private iCloud database.
  • Investments and XIRR. You can track holdings in mutual funds, stocks and gold, follow SIPs and see XIRR, which is the right measure when money goes in on many dates. See What is XIRR?
  • Price. It is free, with no ads and no subscription.
  • Multiple currencies. YNAB's pricing page notes one currency per budget. SampattiTrack supports several, with totals in the currency you choose.

The bank sync question for Indian users

The biggest practical difference is how transactions get in. YNAB's pricing page lists direct bank import for select banks in the US, Canada, the UK and the EU, and says other users can use file-based import. YNAB's support guide describes file import with CSV, QFX or OFX files. We did not find India on YNAB's direct import list, so check with YNAB whether your bank works.

SampattiTrack takes a different route. It never connects to your bank. You can import a CSV statement, turn bank messages into transactions with Shortcuts, scan receipts, or type entries in a few taps. That means more manual steps than automatic sync, and it is the reason your data never leaves your device.

Who should choose which

YNAB may suit you if you want a dedicated budgeting method, you use Android or a browser, your bank is supported for direct import, or you are happy to pay a subscription for a coaching-style tool.

SampattiTrack may suit you if you use an iPhone or iPad, want one private place for spending, net worth and investments, track SIPs and want XIRR, or prefer not to link a bank or create an account.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Some people budget in one tool and keep their records somewhere else. Pick the one whose trade-offs you can live with. For budgeting styles in general, see Budgeting methods compared.
