Back up and restore

Open Settings, then Backup & Restore, to switch on automatic iCloud Drive backup, save a backup file, or restore from either one.

Where to find it

Open Settings, go to Data & Backup and tap Backup & Restore. A sheet titled Backup & Sync opens. You can reach the same sheet from Add on Home, where it is listed as Backup & Sync. It has three parts: an automatic iCloud Drive backup, live sync between your devices, and manual file export.

Automatic backup to iCloud Drive

  1. In the Backup & Sync sheet, switch on iCloud Drive Backup. It saves automatic rolling JSON snapshots to your iCloud Drive.
  2. Check Last iCloud Backup to see when the latest snapshot was taken.
  3. Tap Backup Now any time you want a fresh one, for example before a big import.

This needs iCloud Drive turned on in iOS Settings. It is a backup of your ledger file, separate from live iCloud sync.

Save a backup file

Use Manual File Export for a copy you control. It creates a local JSON snapshot that you can save or share, for example by AirDrop.

  1. Tap Generate Backup File and wait for it to finish.
  2. Tap Share Backup File.
  3. Save it to Files, AirDrop it to another device, or store it somewhere you keep important documents.

The file holds your financial records in readable form. Treat it like a bank statement: do not email it casually or leave it in a shared folder.

Restore from a backup

Restoring is the way to move to a new iPhone without iCloud sync, or to recover after deleting the app.

  1. Install SampattiTrack on the new device and open Settings, then Backup & Restore.
  2. To use the cloud copy, tap Restore under the iCloud backup. SampattiTrack warns that it will replace your current local data with the latest backup, so confirm only if that is what you want.
  3. To use a file instead, tap Select JSON File to Restore and choose your backup.
  4. Check the preview, which shows when the backup was made and how many accounts, transactions, budgets, goals and tags it holds.
  5. Tap Restore This Backup. When it finishes you will see Backup restored successfully.

If a restore reports that some records could not be written, the rest were still restored. Note the message, then email support with it. Do not delete the backup file until your numbers look right.

A good routine

  • Switch on the automatic iCloud Drive backup once and glance at Last iCloud Backup now and then.
  • Make a manual file before deleting the app, changing phones, or running a large import.
  • After a restore, compare a few account balances with your bank to be sure.
  • Deleting the app removes the local ledger. If iCloud sync was on, see iCloud sync for removing the synced copy.

What backups cannot do

SampattiTrack does not host your ledger, so the developer cannot recover data that was deleted from your device and is not in a backup or in your iCloud. That is the price of keeping everything private on your device, so a backup habit matters.
