Units and prices

A Unit is the thing a holding is counted in, such as shares, fund units, grams of gold or a foreign currency. A holding’s value is its quantity times the latest price, not what you paid for it.

A Unit is not a currency

A Unit is anything tradeable that a posting can be counted in: a stock, a mutual fund, gold or a foreign currency. It is separate from your default currency. Postings in your default currency need no Unit at all. A holding posting refers to a Unit by its code, and that Unit’s prices are tracked on their own.

The SampattiTrack portfolio screen showing investment holdings

Holding value is quantity × latest price

The current value of a holding is not the total of what you paid. That total is your cost, which is useful for judging gains but is not what the holding is worth today. The value is the quantity you hold multiplied by the Unit’s latest price.

Example: 100 fund units
ItemFigure
Quantity held100 units
You paid (cost)₹10,000
Latest price₹120 per unit
Value shown₹12,000

A ₹10,000 investment that is now worth ₹12,000 shows ₹12,000. The app revalues holdings at the latest price every time it works out a balance.

Multiple units, one account

One investment account can hold several Units at once, for example a demat account with different shares. Valuation happens for each account and Unit pair: each holding is revalued separately and the results are added together.

Add a Unit

  1. Tap More, then Units. (Or tap Add on Home and choose Unit, described as Stock / MF / Currency.)
  2. Add the Unit by its name and code.
  3. Record your purchases in Ledger mode by choosing that Unit in the Unit menu on a posting.

Enter the quantity you bought and the Price / Unit. The amount is worked out for you. See Quantity vs amount for the details.

Where prices come from

Prices for funds, shares and metals are public reference data. The app fetches them without sending any of your personal finance data. Market data is for information only and may be delayed, so a price on screen may not match the exact market price at this moment.

If a holding looks wrong, first check its latest price, then check the quantity. Value is always quantity multiplied by price.

Common questions

Why is my holding worth more than I paid?

Because the app values holdings at the latest price. Your cost is tracked separately.

Do I need Units for cash and bank accounts?

No. Anything in your default currency works without a Unit.

Can I hold a foreign currency?

Yes. A foreign currency is a Unit like any other, valued at its latest rate in your default currency.

Where do I see the return?

The Portfolio tab shows your holdings. For how returns are measured, read the XIRR guide.
